报告摘要:
In this talk, we give an overview of some of the key concepts in information theory.
We will focus on explaining how these concepts were introduced in the first place,
and why most of them are targeted at understanding the communication problems.
The growing of the information technology, however, calls for a deeper level of
understanding of information exchanges in a much more general context. We
discuss a new set of analytic tools to generalize the conventional information metrics,
and give examples of applying them in data analysis and inference problems.
The purpose of this talk is to give an overview of the field of information theory,
some of its historic successes, some of the challenges it faces today, and some of
the current activities to face these challenges. We use this talk as an introduction to
a more comprehensive short course on information theory and statistical inference,
which we plan to launch soon. The talk outlines some of the key concepts that will be
covered.
